Happy Hour
Make It Yours!
“They’re not just selling beer,” said Professor Zhang Weijiong, Vice President and Co-Dean of CEIBS, “they’re producing culture. They’re promoting spirit.”
The Dean’s comments, directed toward the culture of AB InBev during their info session at CEIBS on Monday, met with applause from MBA candidates—2016, 2017 and exchange—eager at the prospect of securing one of AB InBev’s many summer internships and international positions. As the leading beer distributor in China, AB InBev actively recruits talentfrom the top schools in the region. Their recruiting efforts at CEIBS pulledout all the stops: AB InBev receptionists scantily clad in red dresses lined the halls as students filed into the info session; in the lobby, glowing Budweiser red, students could opt to get their names engraved on special edition beer bottles; even in the small venue itself, the walls were plastered with ads and quotes from internal company leaders touting the virtues of ABInBev.
“The Future of Our Company Will be Defined By You.”
“The Opportunity is Here. Make it Yours.”
The message to students differed from more exclusive companies that sometimes visit. A slew of testimonials from MBA students now at AB InBev mentioned the lack of hierarchy, value on employees, and positive company culture. AB InBev’s message is clear: here we are, we want you, and we’ll treat you well.
With AB InBev’s China market share already reaching 52 breweries and 4.9 billion USD in revenue, one might imagine strong Chinese leadership. However, the president of AB InBev China, Jean “JJ”Jereissati, is in fact from Brazil. He opened the event on a casual note, joking about the nice ties of the ex-pat lifestyle. “I have a good life here in China: two boys, and one wife… one wife officially.” He chuckled, and continued to revealhow AB InBev allows employees to advance quickly in the company. “I was a very normal guy [when I started at AB InBev] without an MBA, and now I’m here, responsible for the most important beer market. This is China.”
The high turnout and student responseattest to AB InBev’s popularity—indeed ranked #2 World’s Most Admired Company by Forbes in 2014, just behind Coca-Cola— and a whole list of available summer internships adds a level of feasibility to a company already making itself accessible to MBA grads. Rishi Melwani, MBA2017, remarked, “[AB InBev] emphasized over and over again that they really look for cultural fit and the fact that they recruit so much from CEIBS goes to show that we produce people of substance.” Many students reflected this sentiment. Cards were exchanged, hands were shaken, and no doubt many CEIBS students will now have the opportunity to work for a company that produces the world’s favorite beers.
